Position Summary:
The Director for Christian Formation (DCF) designs, develops, directs, and
evaluates a total congregational education program that supports the Prayer for Spiritual Growth of St Matthew’s Episcopal Church, “to preach, teach, heal and make disciples.” The DCF provides leadership to assist the congregation in building a solid foundation for Christian living, spirituality, ministry, and outreach, to accomplish the mission of the church at large, “to restore all people to God and each other through Christ” with a focus on young families and youth.
Reporting Relationship:
This position reports to the Rector and works with and through the Senior Warden or Vestry member that serves as the Formation lead.
Objectives:
Create vibrant class offerings to enhance the spiritual growth of all parishioners and increase participation in Sunday morning Christian Formation (CF).
Build intergenerational relationships with children, families, and individuals of the parish, promoting participation by adults, children and youth in worship, service, and leadership.
Utilize the leadership of the church as a team in planning and implementing programs to create opportunities for members of all ages to serve God together.
Working with the Communications Director design an outreach campaign to reach into the local community assuring the unchurched are invited to meet Jesus.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Coordinate, communicate, budget, plan, recruit, support, and train leaders, as needed, for:
Christian Formation (Godly Play, Sunday School, Confirmation Classes, and other curricula)
Vacation Bible School
Episcopal Youth Community (EYC)
Youth Sunday and other seasonal events
Diocesan and Episcopal Church opportunities
Bible Studies and Small Groups
Outreach Projects/Trips
Fellowship Events and Retreats
2. Develop relationships with young families and youth in the parish to integrate them into the ministries of St Matthew’s while maintaining an accurate database of same.
3. Maintain a relationship with the Diocese and other resources to stay current in the newest trends in Formation.
4. Attend staff meetings and other position related meetings as requested by the Rector.
5. Communicate with the Vestry representative for Formation assuring they have updates on all Formation classes, special events, and other
Competencies:
Active member of a Christian congregation
Education background; training and/or experience in theology, church history, scripture, program development, education, administration, management, and communications.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
Two years teaching or Christian Formation experience, and one-year
administrative experience.
Requirements:
Must have flexible hours to include weekends and evenings. Complete and renew, as required, SAFE Church training. Maintain appropriate boundaries with youth and colleagues. Pass all background screening.
