THE GOOD NEWS: Late last year, Saint Matthew’s Episcopal Food Pantry became a Partner Agency of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina for “The Emergency Food Assistance Program,” also known as TEFAP. Through the USDA and the SCDA, we began receiving larger shipments of frozen foods. Consequently, our Food Pantry entered January 2024 needing significantly more freezer capacity.
THE PROBLEM: Where could we find the funds for a new freezer? Then, in February, our large refrigerator suddenly stopped working. Now, not only did we need more freezer capability, but we also required additional refrigeration. How would we raise the funds for both?
SO WE PRAYED: In this moment of abundant need, we collectively prayed for a miracle.
WE DID WHAT WE COULD: We began researching suitable refrigeration equipment and let it be known we would need to raise a larger amount to meet these requirements. Generous individuals stepped up to assist, and we ordered the necessary units. In March, our Food Pantry was honored with the “Partner Agency Award” and a $250 credit in recognition of our rapid growth in serving TEFAP to numerous needy client households.
BUT IT WASN'T QUITE ENOUGH: However, it soon became apparent that we would not raise quite enough within the short time frame. So we kept praying.
THE FIRST MIRACLE: On April 4 we received notification from Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina that we had been awarded a grant of $12,500 to cover the costs of new refrigeration. This generous amount covered 90% of our expenses, truly an answer to our prayers! The orders we had placed for a large 3-door freezer and a matching large 3-door refrigerator, were promptly shipped from factory stock in St. Louis.
AN APPARENT OBSTACLE: But the units could not be off-loaded from the delivery truck. In addition, there was apparently not enough clearance through the Parish Hall / Gym doors. And no company wanted to move them into the church gym.
SO WE PRAYED: And we prayed. For another miracle.
THE SECOND MIRACLE: We reached out to the Food Equipment Company in Greer, Mr. Chris Carlton who graciously agreed to transport the two units, move them into our gym, and assemble the wheels. Within a span of 90 minutes, the refrigeration units arrived at St. Matthew’s. Mr. Carlton's team unloaded the units, maneuvered them into the gym, installed the wheels, and connected them. Their expertise with this equipment seemed almost magical.
PRAYERS OF GRATITUDE: Once again, prayers were answered!
As you can see, the St. Matthew’s Episcopal Food Pantry is indeed a Blessed Ministry!
Come see for yourself,
